The wedding dress guide for every body shape

When it comes to finding the one, the options can be a little overwhelming. When we say “the one”, we mean the dress, not the partner of your dreams, of course. Assuming you have already found that one if you are looking for a wedding dress! And understanding which silhouettes flatter your body shape the most can help narrow down the options. We have created a little guide to help steer you in the right direction, but this is by no mean prescriptive. If you have an established style and feel confident in your body, then we say flaunt it! But sometimes editing the options ahead of a fitting can help you understand what you like, what you don’t, and what suits your figure and your personality best.

The perfect match for your body shape

One of the most common questions our Private Client Managers get from brides-to-be is: "Which silhouettes work best for my body type?” Our experience with brides since we launched our first White Collection in 2018 has taught us that every body is different, and the only way to find out if a dress is the one is to try it on. However our experience has also taught us that some styles tend to work best for specific body types. So discover the silhouettes that might suit you best below.

Petite: cropped cocktail dresses & delicate details

Finding a wedding gown can be tricky for petite figures as puffy dresses can drown smaller bodies, so avoid meringues at all costs. Instead focus on cropped, cocktail dresses that hit mid-calf or ankle-lengths, possibly with a slit, to elongate your legs and highlight strappy sandals. The focus should be on beautiful details like delicate straps or plumetis tulle. Opt for relaxed construction and subtle embellishment. Keep the shape streamlined and pared back, and consider timeless minimalist options such as our Signature Sienna Cropped Dress. If you go for a full length number, make sure you have a tailor on-hand to help you shorten the hem and ensure the perfect fit.

Tall & slender: slip dresses & mermaid silhouettes

Emphasise your long figure with a classic slip dress for a ‘90s, Roman goddess vibe, à la Kate Moss. Minimal, sophisticated, and impossibly chic, the slip dress makes a case for a ‘less is more’ take on bridal. With a long, slender frame, you can pull it off. A halter neck dress will highlight your lean arms. If you prefer something a little more detailed, then a mermaid or trumpet skirt will hug your hips while creating all the right curves. Don’t be afraid to go all-out with lace detailing and layers of satin, but keep the silhouette clean and elegant.

Curvy, hourglass & full-chested: corseted & A-line silhouettes

With a curvy figure, the crucial element is balanced proportions. If you have a narrower waist, emphasise it as that will create contrast and balance to the overall effect. By all means, wear shapewear to help you smooth out bumps if you so wish, but never take a size too small. It is better to take a size bigger and have it tailored to perfection than it looking too tight. If you are full-chested, bust support is key so look for hidden corsetry like our Phoebe and Verona Bustier dresses that feature built-in cups. For hourglass silhouettes, an A-line dress is perfect. Our Pinwheel design has a knotted waist finished with a cropped A-line skirt and long sleeves. All in pristine diamond-coloured sequins. If that doesn’t scream celebration, fun and glamour...

Athletic: jumpsuits & soft sleeves

For athletic bodies, a word of advice : work with your angles. A square neck will balance out broad shoulders for example. A low, round neck, as seen on our Salvador dress, will soften your silhouette. If you want to show off toned arms, a halter neck or spaghetti straps can be divine. If you prefer to cover your arms, then loose, billowing sleeves evoke soft femininity. Add curves with a sash, belted number like our cool modern suiting. Consider a jumpsuit: elegant and comfortable, it makes a refreshing change from the classic wedding dress and can be a chic option for a civil, micro-wedding or a rehearsal dinner too.

Tips for finding your dream dress

- Before heading to your first bridal appointment, it’s a good idea to get to know your general measurements to help determine your body shape and closest size

- Listen to your bridal advisors, they are experts for a reason and may show you things you hadn’t previously considered

- The point of finding the right silhouette is that you don’t need to worry about any parts of your body you don’t feel 100% comfortable highlighting, and that instead showcase your glorious self and just focus on having the best day

- Make sure you can move, so you can dance and party late into the night

- The most important is that you feel your best on the big day: so go with what makes you feel incredible, comfortable and the best possible version of you

- Let your personality shine with thoughtful details

- If it is “the one”, you shouldn’t have to overthink it and make too many adjustments, you’ll just know.
