Inspirational women of style & substance

Inspirational women of style & substance

One of our long-standing beliefs at Galvan is that women have many facets, and that being both stylish and inspirational leaders aren’t mutually exclusive attributes. Our Founders are proof of this, being acute business women as well as style gurus. But we have also been blessed to dress some incredible women since we launched the brand — from Michelle Obama to Taylor Swift, the Countess of Wessex to Angelina Jolie, Phoebe Waller-Bridge to Deepika Padukone. From the amazing charities that they have founded and supported, the vision with which they have led companies and countries, the obstacles they have overcome and issues they have raised, the industries they have disrupted and excelled in; these women truly prove that you can be a girl boss, while being a style icon in your own right. The one thing they have in common is that they chose to wear Galvan for special moments to mark their achievements, and for that we feel honoured and that we have achieved our ultimate goal: to galvanise and empower women — be they celebrated female leaders, Royals, athletes, Hollywood stars, or simply mothers, workers, carers, friends, who inspires us each and every day.

Of course, we still have our own wishlist of female heroes that we hope to dress one day: from Oprah Winfrey to Hillary Clinton, Serena Williams to Greta Thunberg, and even the ones we wish we could have dressed: Rosa Parks, Grace Kelly or Audrey Hepburn. And one of these female trail-blazers' most important job, as well as ours, is to educate, inspire and support the female voices of tomorrow. That is why this International Women’s Month, we are supporting Girls Leadership, a charity organisation that teaches girls to exercise the power of their voice by providing programs grounded in social emotional learning. The Girls Leadership program focuses on gender and racial equity to address the internal and external barriers to leadership development. It provides programs for girls, workshops for families, development training for teachers, guidance counsellors and non-profit staff. We will be donating 20% of the profits from a selection of pieces online to support this organisation. We couldn’t think of a more worthy cause to support than the female leaders of tomorrow. Now, time to take some style cues from our favourite women of style and substance.

Michelle Obama

A true icon of our times, Michelle is the consummate thought leader-meet-style icon. From being the first black FLOTUS, to her incredible efforts in the fields of education, nutrition, poverty awareness and more as a First Lady, and her continued work with the Obama Foundation, she is a true inspiration to so many. Not to mention her best-selling memoir “Becoming” which retraces her awe-inspiring journey and had us hooked and moved from beginning to end. We just love her positive attitude, advocacy for women and joie-de-vivre. So it is a true honour to have dressed Michelle twice on the cover of People magazine, where she wore our Winter Sun Suit in Mustard, and our Moonlight Dress in Black Sequins.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge

One of our all time favourite actresses, director and writer, Phoebe truly embodies the concept of the multi-hyphenate. Her must-watch shows Fleabag and Killing Eve have been firm favourites at Galvan HQ and it is no surprise her wonderful sense of humour, self-deprecation and ability for creating unique female heroines has earned her a slew of awards — from BAFTAS to SAGS, EMMYS to Golden Globes, Phoebe must have quite the collection by now. And her style is like her mind — cool, irreverent, intelligent, modern and fun. Phoebe has graced the red carpet in a custom Galvan Phoebe Dress (named after her, of course), our classic Pandora style, our Tuxedo Jumpsuit and one of our Sequin Jackets. We hope she keeps these awards close to her (no doubt fabulous) wardrobe!

Taylor Swift

One of the world’s most successful singer-songwriters, Taylor proves that you can be a master of your own destiny and the way she leads her industry whilst remaining true to who she is and unafraid to voice her feminist and political viewpoints truly inspires us. With 11 Grammys so far, she gives more than her music to the world, having contributed large sums to the Red Cross and set up her own foundation in Tennessee. A huge influence on the next generation of girls, she has a glamorous yet all-American style. We loved her in our Bustier dress on the cover of People magazine, as well as in our gold Stargaze gown, an all over-sequin dress.

Adwoa Aboah

Adwoa is a true force in fashion, having graced the first issue of British Vogue under the helm of revered editor Edward Enninful. Her truly unique beauty has inspired a new set of beauty standards in the modelling industry and earned her many covers, as well as the title of Model of the Year. Her pioneering charity, Gurls Talk, is a community-led non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting the mental health and wellbeing of adolescent girls and young women. Plus she knows how to dress, and we just loved how she wore our Valletta Dress in Jungle green in the coolest, nonchalant and joyful way on the streets of Notting Hill. Go Girl!

Gwyneth Paltrow

Who doesn’t have a soft spot for Gwinnie? She is one of our ultimate 90s style icon and definitely an all-time Galvan muse — who doesn’t remember her iconic Ralph Lauren pale pink Oscars slip and dreamy wardrobe in The Talented Mr Ripley — as well as an acclaimed and multiple award-winning actress. Not only that, but with GOOP, Paltrow has reinvented herself as a true wellness visionary and savvy business leader. So it is the ultimate compliment that this modern goddess chose to wear Galvan on several occasions, including our all-silk Margot dress in lush emerald and our eponymous Gwyneth jumpsuit.

Deepika Padukone

Over 50 million followers, one of the highest paid actresses in India and one of Time’s 100 most influential people in the world in the world are just a few of Deepika's accomplishments. In 2015, she founded the mental health charity Live Love Laugh, aiming to give hope to every person experiencing stress, anxiety and depression. This arose from Deepika personal journey with mental health issues and she wanted to reduce the stigma around it, provide mental health resources and domain expertise, in her native India specifically. Timeless beauty Deepika was a vision of graceful style in our Mini Tunic Dress in rose nude satin.

Dina Asher-Smith

The formidable Dina is an Olympian sprinter. The fastest British woman in recorded history, she has been listed in the 2021 Powerlist as one of the UK’s most influential people of African & Caribbean descent. The Londoner is a Bvlgari and Nike ambassador and recently sported our must-loved Julianne Suit in pure white — the epitome of chic.

Emma Watson

British actress Emma has been a star since her iconic role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter franchise when she was only nine years old. As well as the numerous acclaimed cinema roles and awards she has garnered since, she has also been a keen social advocate and charity supporter. Appointed as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador in 2014, the accomplished actor, humanitarian and Brown University graduate is dedicating her efforts towards the empowerment of young women and serving as an advocate for UN Women’s HeForShe campaign in promoting gender equality. Emma also happens to be a fan of Galvan jumpsuits, having graced the cover of Entertainment Weekly in our Laced Jumpsuit and worn this shoulder-baring number on the Jimmy Kimmel Live Show.

Greta Gerwig

Bright, talented and stylish, Greta represents the ultimate Galvan girl. An Oscar-nominated actress and filmmaker, Greta directed an acclaimed remake of the iconic Little Women story last year and wore this chic Galvan velvet gown at the Paris premiere of the film. A new mother, the Sacramento native has many other projects under her belt and we will eagerly follow her inspiring path.

Ruth Chapman

The Founder of the style destination Matches Fashion, Ruth has been cited many times as a mentor and inspiration by our Galvan Co-Founders. An early supporter of Galvan, Ruth has an eye for all things fashion, style and interiors. We just loved her feminine yet powerful style in our all-silk midnight Margot dress, the ultimate in chic simplicity.

Angelina Jolie

Angelina really is the poster girl for brains and beauty. Having won an Oscar, 3 Golden Globes and 2 SAG awards, Angelina is one of the most famous Hollywood stars in the world. Yet, it is her relentless humanitarian work that impresses us the most. Awarded with the Global Humanitarian Award by the United Nations Associations of the USA for her work with UNHCR and refugees, Jolie also chairs the Education Partnership for Children of Conflict, which helps fund education programs for children affected by war and conflict. So it was the ultimate accolade to see her in our Signature Satin Trench Coat on this glamorous photoshoot with her beloved dogs.

The Countess of Wessex

Sophie, Countess of Wessex may be the Queen’s daughter-in-law, but she is nonetheless impressive in her own right. A Patron of over 70 charities, her work focuses on supporting people with disabilities, the prevention of blindness in developing countries, agriculture and fashion. The latter is no surprise when looking at Sophie’s style pedigree. She always picks elegant Galvan pieces that she makes her own, and that blend seamlessly in her chic yet utilitarian wardrobe. She was recently spotted wearing our Safari Crepe Trousers, Signature Corset Jumpsuit and Silk Margot dress. Royal style at its best.

Helena Zengel

Aged 12, Helena was one of the youngest ever actors to be nominated for Golden Globes and SAG awards, having received acclaim for her role alongside Tom Hanks in “News of the World”. The German actress showed her early style credentials by sporting a custom Galvan Jumpsuit at the 2021 Globes ceremony. If this is how she rocks at this young age, we think the sky is the limit for her acting achievements, and we will be following her stylish journey with eager eyes.

Dr Barbara Sturm

A fellow Dusseldorf native (our Galvan Atelier is based in the German style hub), Barbara is a true powerhouse. The aesthetics doctor and facialist to the stars is the founder and CEO of her eponymous skincare brand, one of the biggest beauty success story of recent years. A long-standing supporter of Galvan, we consider Barbara as part of the extended Galvan family and her style is always as flawless as her skin. One of our favourite looks of hers was head-to-toe Galvan sequins at the Oscars Vanity Fair after-party. But we also loved this classic look in our Signature Sienna Dress in Jungle green, perfectly complimented by her preternaturally youthful glow.
